Nick Savaidis

Founder
Etiko and Jinta Sport, Australi
a

We are delighted to welcome as a Keynote Speaker Nick Savaidis. A pioneer of the Australia/New Zealand fair trade movement Nick has long had a passion for social enterprise. In the 1990’s while working with indigenous communities in Australia’s Northern Territory, he was involved in developing community owned and operated businesses, from a community laundromat to the Tanami Digital Network which delivered much needed communications for very remote communities.

Nick went on to found Etiko Pty Ltd, the successful Australian award winning company behind two fair trade brands: Etiko, focused on street fashion, and Jinta Sport, focused on sports gear. Via the sale of their products, Etiko and Jinta Sport help fund community development projects in several Asian countries, sports and health programs on indigenous communities in Central Australia and raise funds for environmental and human rights groups.

Since 2013 Nick’s brand Etiko has achieved the highest ranking for ethical production in the Australian Fashion Report every year the report has been released.  To find out more go to www.etiko.com.au and www.jintasport.com.au

Chris Morrison

Co-Founder
All Good Bananas and Karma Cola

After 25 years in successful business, Chris Morrison founded All Good Organics with Simon Coley and Matt Morrison and together they launched New Zealand’s first Fairtrade bananas in February 2010, despite being told they were ‘cowboys’ and that no one would be willing to pay $1 more for a bunch of bananas. Six years on, All Good has proven the skeptics wrong showing that people do want ethical produce and carving out a 6% share of the highly competitive banana category. In 2012, they launched Karma Cola a fairtrade and organic range of soft drinks that support small producers. Chris is also an investor in small ethical businesses Kokako Organic and Little Island /Nice Blocks. In 2012, Chris was named Sustainability Champion by the Sustainable Business Network for his ongoing commitment to ethical business. Find out more at www.allgoodorganics.co.nz

Michelle Pratt

Founder and Director
Child Labor Free

During 30 years of commitment to children’s education, Michelle, together with business partner Nikki Prendergast, operated a series of early childhood centres. Their journey to establish Child Labor Free was born from the startling realization that “The toys we sourced for our early childhood centres, could in fact have been made by children”. Engaging experts, they set about creating a global certification system that can assess a brand's supply chain and certify products and manufacturers as child labor free. With their vision to create a world free from child labor, and believing that consumers and companies can work together to create significant change in the lives of children, they are flipping the conversation from "blaming and shaming" to a positive movement of consumer led demand. A lecturer at Auckland University, Michelle was a finalist in the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year, 2014. Find out more at www.childlaborfree.com

Carolyn Robertson

PhD Student
Otago Univeristy

After a year of only buying Fair Trade, organic clothing in 2009, Carolyn set out to research how people might respond positively to the exploitative ethic inherent in consumerism. She began a PhD at Otago University considering, in particular, the response of Christians (whose teaching traditionally espouses generosity, simplicity, contentment and care for others) to the pressures of acquisitive individualism. Carolyn's research, which is nearing completion, has focused on the motivations and positive steps people take in response to the exploitation of workers and the destruction of the environment, focusing on people's everyday choices, particularly around consumption. We look forward to her sharing her findings with us.
